Gurgaon Playschools Face Crackdown Over Lack of Registration

WCD Department Launches Citywide Inspections

The Women and Child Development (WCD) department in Gurgaon has revealed that a staggering 96% of private playschools are operating without mandatory registration. Of the nearly 800 playschools in the district, only 30 have submitted the required documents for official recognition. In response, the department will begin physical inspections across the city in May. Playschools that fail to meet basic safety and infrastructure standards may face closure.

Low Compliance Despite Ample Time

In 2022, the state government made it compulsory for all playschools catering to children aged 3 to 6 years to register with the WCD department. Despite having two years to comply, most institutions have ignored the directive. Last year, only 10 playschools were officially recognized. According to Dr. Simran Sharma, the district programme officer, very few schools have shown initiative this year either. The department will begin detailed inspections and report serious violations to the directorate.

Push for Registration Through SARAL Portal

The administration is urging playschool operators to complete the registration process. Officials are contacting schools directly via phone calls and messages. Operators must visit the SARAL portal or the WCD department website, download the application form, and upload completed documents, including photographs. If approved, the department issues a recognition certificate valid for one year, which must be renewed annually.

Children’s Safety at Risk

Many unregistered playschools function from cramped or poorly maintained buildings. These schools often lack essential safety infrastructure, putting children at risk. Parents are advised to verify the registration status of any school before enrollment. The crackdown aims to ensure that all playschools offer a safe and nurturing environment for young learners in Gurgaon.
