Scorching Temperatures Continue in Gurgaon
Gurgaon experienced extreme heat on Friday, with temperatures soaring to 42.9°C—three degrees above normal for this time of year. The night offered little respite as minimum temperatures reached 30.7°C, 0.6°C higher than the previous day and 4°C above average.
Although Gurgaon narrowly avoided a formal heatwave declaration, other parts of Haryana continue to face severe conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected across the state until June 14. A heatwave is declared when temperatures hit 45°C or more, or exceed 40°C with a deviation of at least 4.5°C from normal levels.
Rain Brings Hope for Relief
Rainfall may soon bring relief to the city. The IMD predicts light to moderate rain at isolated places between June 15 and 16, followed by thunderstorms and gusty winds from June 15 to 18. This weather shift could lead to a temperature drop of 2–4°C after June 15.
Gurgaon is expected to see maximum temperatures ranging from 36°C to 40°C from June 15 to 19, with minimum temperatures between 27°C and 30°C during the same period.
Health Advice Amid Sweltering Conditions
Medical experts urge residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Dr. Amitabha Ghosh, Consultant at Manipal Hospital, warns that exposure to extreme heat can cause heat stroke—a life-threatening condition marked by a body temperature over 40°C. Early symptoms include weakness, dizziness, confusion, and elevated heart rate.
Children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease are especially vulnerable. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and limiting outdoor activity during peak hours are essential.
Residents should also ensure proper ventilation at home, keep blinds closed during sunny hours, and opt for light, water-rich foods. Showers and baths can help maintain body cooling during the intense heat.
