Preparing Gurugram for Monsoon Flooding
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced a series of mock drills at 21 underpasses across the city to prepare for potential flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. These drills aim to test the functionality of water pumps, drainage systems, and diesel generator (DG) sets installed at the underpasses to manage heavy rainfall effectively.
Officials stated that mock drills will begin in early May and continue through mid-May. The drills will help identify any operational gaps in the infrastructure, allowing agencies to make timely repairs and prevent serious waterlogging issues during heavy rains.
Collaboration Among Agencies
GMDA will collaborate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Public Works Department (PWD), and private developer DLF, depending on who manages each underpass. Each agency will ensure that their respective underpasses are fully prepared for the monsoon.
The schedule includes key locations like Ambience Mall, Shankar Chowk, Subhash Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Vatika Chowk, and Hero Honda Chowk. GMDA officials have ensured that traffic movement will not be disrupted during these drills, minimizing inconvenience to commuters.
Focus on Rapid Action and Public Safety
The mock drills are not just a check on equipment but a critical part of GMDA’s broader strategy to ensure public safety. Officials will immediately act on any shortcomings identified during the drills. This includes repairing faulty pumps, clearing blocked drainage systems, and ensuring DG sets are operational.
By taking proactive steps now, GMDA aims to prevent chaotic traffic jams, commuter delays, and property damage often caused by waterlogged underpasses. The initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to making Gurugram resilient and functional even during severe weather conditions.
