Gurgaon Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Soar

Season’s Hottest Day Recorded in Gurgaon

Gurgaon experienced its hottest day of the season on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 42.8°C, surpassing the previous day’s high by 0.3°C. The minimum temperature also rose to 29°C, reflecting warmer nights across the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heatwave and warm night conditions until June 12. Dry weather is expected to continue over the next four days, with only isolated light rain anticipated. Heatwave conditions will affect scattered areas from June 9 to 12, while warm nights may persist in some locations. Thunderstorms and gusty winds could bring some relief from June 13 to 15.

Residents Struggle Amid Sweltering Conditions

Local residents are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the extreme heat. Somika Sharma from Sector 31 described stepping outside as “entering an oven,” limiting outdoor activities for her family. Auto-rickshaw driver Amit Khurana highlighted the challenges of working in such conditions, emphasizing the need for more public water points and shaded rest areas.

Health Officials Issue Warnings and Advice

Health authorities have urged citizens to stay hydrated, avoid exposure between 12 pm and 4 pm, and wear light clothing. Vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with health conditions are advised to remain indoors during peak heat hours.

Dr. Vishwas Chitale of CEEW noted that north India, including Delhi, faces heightened heat risks due to rising temperatures and humidity. Delhi recently recorded a “feel-like” temperature of 47.7°C. IMD forecasts continued extreme heat through Wednesday, with thunderstorms potentially bringing relief by Friday. Several areas in Delhi, including Ayanagar and Ridge, have already seen temperatures above 45°C, meeting the IMD’s heatwave criteria.

Authorities remain vigilant, urging citizens to follow advisories to prevent heat-related illnesses.
