Gurgaon’s CO level 100 times higher than safe limits, reveals CPCB data

Recent data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicates that between January 1 and 23, 2025, Gurgaon’s carbon monoxide (CO) levels have exceeded safe limits by over 100 times, with concentrations ranging from 110µg/m³ to 170µg/m³, far surpassing the permissible limit of 1.7µg/m³. This significant increase in CO levels poses serious health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Experts attribute the surge to factors such as the burning of waste materials like plastic and rubber, as well as traffic congestion. In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has mandated stringent punitive measures and directed the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) to prompt the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to inspect waste burning hotspots. They are also required to report on enforcement actions, case statuses, and strategies to eliminate open waste burning. Monitoring data reveals that Vikas Sadan, a commercial area near the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, recorded 90 hourly exceedances of the Indian National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) limit of 4 mg/m³, identifying it as a significant CO pollution hotspot. Sector-51 and NISE Gwalpahari documented 12 and 9 exceedances, respectively, while Teri Gram recorded none. Residents have reported persistent illegal waste disposal and burning activities, despite numerous complaints to the police, MCG, and pollution control authorities. Additionally, particulate matter levels have repeatedly breached safe limits. On Thursday, PM2.5 levels peaked at Sector 51 (256 µg/m³), followed by Teri Gram (234 µg/m³) and Vikas Sadan (220 µg/m³). PM10 emissions were highest at Sector 51 (245µg/m³), followed by Teri Gram (230 µg/m³). The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) remained in the ‘poor’ category for the fifth consecutive day on Thursday, registering 207, up from Wednesday’s 201. The air quality early warning system forecasts poor air quality from January 24 to 26, with predominant northwesterly winds potentially bringing additional pollutants into the region.

Gurgaon Battles Record Heatwave: Citizens Endure Unbearable Conditions

Rising Temperatures Shatter Records Gurgaon is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave as the minimum temperature soared to 30.1°C — marking the highest this season — while the maximum temperature reached a scorching 44°C on Thursday. The relentless heat has left residents struggling to cope, with many relying heavily on air conditioning to find relief at night. Across Haryana, temperatures have remained alarmingly high. Sirsa (IAF) recorded the state’s peak temperature at 46.6°C, followed closely by cities like Fatehabad, Hisar, Rohtak, and Bhiwani, where mercury levels stayed between 44°C and 46°C. In northern districts such as Ambala and Panchkula, temperatures hovered between 40°C and 42°C. Meteorological Factors Behind the Heatwave The India Meteorological Department (IMD) explains that a heat wave in plain areas occurs when the maximum temperature hits 45°C or more, or exceeds 40°C with a deviation of over 4.5°C from the average. This extreme weather is attributed to atmospheric conditions, including a cyclonic circulation over Punjab and West Rajasthan, combined with a weak western disturbance. Resident Meena Sharma from Sector 14 shared her distress: “I’ve never felt heat like this before. Even at night, it’s impossible to sleep without the air conditioner on. We are worried about power cuts and water shortages.” Economic Impact and Forecasts Local businesses have also suffered due to reduced footfall as people avoid stepping outside. Rajinder Singh, a shopkeeper in Sector 95, lamented, “Business is down because people don’t want to step out. We have started keeping cold water and ORS sachets for customers, but even that is not enough.” IMD forecasts offer little hope for immediate relief. From June 12 to 14, severe heatwave conditions will persist. Light to moderate rain may occur between June 15 and 16, bringing some respite alongside thunderstorms and gusty winds until June 18. A slight dip of 2–4°C in temperatures is expected after June 15. Authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight between noon and 4 pm, and wear light, breathable clothing. Dr. Vishwas Chitale from CEEW emphasized the need for cooling shelters and access to clean drinking water and medical aid for those exposed to the sun. Source: times of india

Ex-Army officer among two cheated of Rs 48 lakh in investment frauds In Gurgaon, two individuals—a 49-year-old retired Army Colonel from Sector 83 and a 75-year-old businessman from DLF Phase IV—have collectively lost ₹48 lakh in separate stock market investment scams. Police have registered two cases of cheating in connection with these incidents. In the first case, the retired Colonel was approached on January 9 by an individual named Shambhavi Sanya, who claimed to represent a trading platform. She persuaded him to open an Over the Counter (OTC) trading account and transfer funds into various bank accounts under the guise of investments. Between January 13 and 28, he transferred a total of ₹15 lakh. The virtual account showed a balance of ₹48.2 lakh, but when he attempted to withdraw the funds, he was asked to pay a ₹9 lakh service charge. After paying the fee, his withdrawal requests were still denied. He later discovered that the company Sanya claimed to represent did not offer any OTC trading services. A case has been registered at Cyber Manesar police station under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In the second incident, the elderly businessman was defrauded of ₹7 lakh between December 27, 2024, and January 8, 2025. Gurgaon Set for Historic Mayoral Election: BJP vs. Congress in a High-Stakes Contest

In Gurgaon’s inaugural direct mayoral election, the contest has become a focal point for the city’s influential Punjabi community, with both major parties fielding Punjabi women candidates. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Rajrani Malhotra, a graduate homemaker and wife of RSS veteran Tilak Raj Malhotra. The Congress party has put forward Seema Pahuja, a social worker with a 10th-grade education and former BJP councillor. The election is scheduled for March 2, with approximately 900,000 voters expected to cast their ballots across 721 polling booths to elect a woman mayor from the BC-A category. Malhotra benefits from the BJP’s strong organizational support and her husband’s deep ties within the Punjabi community. Pahuja, despite her recent defection from the BJP, brings valuable local political experience and her husband Bunty Pahuja’s social influence to her campaign. The election’s outcome may hinge on the support of the Vaishya community, which has felt underrepresented in recent elections. The BJP’s candidate selection has caused some dissatisfaction among both Punjabi and Vaishya communities. Congress functionary Ajay Singh Yadav noted that the party’s decision to nominate a Punjabi woman prompted the BJP to adjust its strategy accordingly. Haryana BJP media in-charge Arvind Saini highlighted the party’s previous electoral successes in the region, attributing them to the government’s developmental work. The election results are anticipated to potentially reshape political alignments in the city.

Heatwave Grips South Haryana: Temperatures Rise Amid Dry Spell

Rising Temperatures Trigger Heatwave Alert South Haryana is under a heatwave alert as temperatures continue to climb. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a further rise of 1°C to 2°C in maximum temperatures over the next two days. An orange alert has been issued for the next three days, signaling severe heat conditions across the region. The city of Gurgaon recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5°C—the hottest day of the season—while Sirsa hit 45.8°C. Most districts saw temperatures between 42°C and 46°C, with Rohtak and Jhajjar experiencing readings up to 4.4°C above normal. Residents Struggle with Extreme Heat Residents describe the weather as unbearable. In Sector 56, Renu Sharma found hot water coming from her tap each morning, forcing her family to store water overnight. Abhishek Mishra of DLF Phase 3 also reported steaming water and now stores water ahead of time. Kavita Yadav from Palam Vihar said stepping outside feels like entering a furnace, with dry, scorching air making even short walks exhausting. Minimum temperatures are rising too, with Gurgaon’s lowest at 28.2°C—over a degree higher than the previous day. Warm night conditions may persist, reducing the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat. Forecast: Thunderstorms and Continued Heat From June 13 to 15, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph are expected in isolated areas. Until then, dry weather will dominate, offering little relief. Delhi also faces extreme heat, with temperatures reaching 45.5°C at certain locations and a “feels-like” heat index of 49°C due to humidity. Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. IMD defines a heatwave when temperatures exceed 40°C for two consecutive days across multiple stations, or when deviations from normal readings surpass 6.4°C for severe cases. Call for Urgent Heat Action Plans Dr. Vishwas Chitale of CEEW warns that over 57% of Indian districts face high heat risk due to rising hot days, warm nights, and increased humidity. Shrinking gaps between day and night temperatures worsen health risks. Experts stress the urgent need for localized Heat Action Plans to protect lives and livelihoods in cities across India.
