SC to Hear Petitions Challenging Demolition of Illegal Constructions in Gurgaon’s DLF Phases

The Supreme Court will hear 14 petitions on Friday, challenging the ongoing drive to demolish unauthorized constructions in various DLF phases in Gurgaon. The petitions, filed by residents’ associations and individual property owners, are aimed at halting the demolition of properties, alleging that the actions are unfair and requesting additional time for compliance. These petitions are in response to a strict crackdown on illegal constructions in DLF Phases 1 to 5, initiated after orders from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Over 2,200 Properties Identified for Demolition

The issue at hand involves over 2,200 properties that the authorities have identified for demolition or utility disconnections. The Supreme Court’s intervention is being sought as the petitioners believe the enforcement of these actions is excessive, with many of the residents claiming they were unaware that their properties were in violation of building norms and zoning laws.

Background of the Demolition Orders

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had initially ordered the demolition of unauthorized constructions back in 2020, following a petition regarding illegal structures in the area. The Haryana government is committed to executing these orders and has set in motion a series of measures, including the sealing of properties and cutting off utilities. The authorities have warned that those failing to comply will face serious legal consequences, including the possibility of demolition and disconnection of services.

Security and Enforcement Measures in Place

To ensure the smooth execution of the demolition drive, local police have been deployed, and strict security arrangements are in place. The authorities are resolute in enforcing the court orders, emphasizing that illegal constructions pose risks to public safety, urban planning, and the environment. The case will be closely watched, with the Supreme Court set to deliberate on the fairness and legality of the demolition orders, which could have significant implications for urban development in the region in the coming months ahead, affecting the lives of many people.
